A women's rights committee in the European Union is pushing for new guidelines to regulate advertisements. It wants an unequivocal ban on any television commercial that enforces gender stereotypes including those that market females as sex symbols.
Marketing campaigns that would come under threat under such a policy include women selling perfume, housewives in the kitchen and men convicted for Driving Under Influence. A present commercial involving a bare-chested male promoting Diet Coke would be forced to exit the scene. All promotion of Wonderbras involving model Eva Herzigova would also get the axe.
Advertising authorities are not thrilled by the proposal and insist they already have checks and balances in place to limit the intensity of such stereotypes.
