Researchers have established that people living in the lands invaded by the Romans have less protection from the HIV than the countries they managed to avoid.
Genetic studies of people in stretches of Europe where the Romans never treaded reveal that people here lack genetic material that binds to HIV easily. Hence they are significantly less likely to get afflicted by AIDS.
This conclusion was reached based on an examination of 19,000 DNA samples across Europe.
What's most intriguing about this discovery is that HIV only began starting in the 1980s so it is not clear why it is strongly linked to genetic variations with such an older origin.
