SAN FRANCISCO, CA--A wildfire broke out on Angel Island Sunday night.
Thirty to forty campers were evacuated from the island. Around 8:00 p.m. smoke was smelled on south side of the island. Because it broke out near a camping area, it is suspected that it was not caused by nature. The area that is burning is brush and some oak.
So far, the flames have not burned any historical sites: Angel Island is known as "The Ellis Island Of The WEst." If you came to the United States from Japan or China, you would spend several days on the island getting cleared to come to the mainland.
Since it is an island---land surrounded by water---everything has to be brought in by boat. There is a fire truck stationed on the island, but fifty firefighters were brought in by boat, right away, to fight the fire.
Angel Island has an interesting history: Juan Manuel de Ayala, who came to the Bay Area in 1775, gave the island its name; and many, many duels were fought on the island in the 1800s.
