Is it true that Iranian agents are bribing Iraqi lawmakers to oppose the security agreement due to be signed between Iraq and the United States? If it were true, who would hold MPs accountable? Who will hold Iran responsible for meddling in Iraq’s internal affairs? What if the accuser is General Ray Odierno, the new U.S. commander in Iraq?
In one of the strongest accusations by Washington to its foe Iran regarding its interference in Iraq, Odierno made the accusation in an interview with the Washington Post published on Monday. The Newspaper quoted him as saying that Iran is working publicly and behind the scenes to cancel the agreement between Iraq and the US which is supposed to be ratified by the Iraqi Parliament.
“We know that there are many relationships with people here for many years going back to when Saddam was in charge, and I think they're utilizing those contacts to attempt to influence the outcome of the potential vote in the council of representatives,&rdq
uo; Odierno said, referring to Iraq's parliament.
“We get reports of people coming in to pay off people to vote against it. Whether it's true or not I have no specific proof, but there are many intelligence reports that say that activity is going on”, he added.
It is to be noted that the United States also accuses Iran of planning violence ahead of provincial elections in Iraq in addition to providing training and funds to Iraqi militias in order to attack US Forces. On the other hand, Iran denies that it meddles in Iraqi affairs or supports militia. Source:
