Iraq to probe displacement of Christians

Iraq’s government decided to send a senior delegation to Mosul in order to tackle the displacement of Christian families.
“The cabinet stressed the need to move quickly to support the security effort with intensive military operations to restore security and order in Mosul and to reassure citizens,” Cabinet spokesman Ali Al Dabbagh said in a statement. He added that the government ordered a comprehensive and immediate investigation on the conjuncture that led to this painful situation through the intelligence coordination committee.
Yunadim Kanna, a Christian lawmaker, said the situation after the deployment of security forces is calm refusing to accuse any party. He added that aggressions are planned for and accusations should not be pointed arbitrarily. Kanna who convened with members of the ministerial council heading a Christian delegation noted that more than 1,500 families had left following recent killings of Christians. Kanna explained that one of the major demands of the delegation was to impose curfew in the regions from which Christians had flew in order to prevent robberies.
For his part, Defense Ministry media advisor Brigadier General Mohammed Al Askari announced that what happened to Christians in Mosul is part of a studied plan to displace this vital social Iraqi component noting that the “accused of these criminal acts” has resorted to “moral war” in completion to their aims. Al Askari evoked reports about mass displacement of Christians from the City affirming that the number of displaced families does not exceed 175 families. He revealed as well about negotiations with Church representatives to return displaced home after redeploying forces in the city and dispatching new police and army units therein in cooperation with multinational forces to protect citizens, clergymen and sanctuaries.
In his turn, Chaldean Archbishop Louis Sako expressed deep concern over displacement of Christian citizens in Nineveh Province. Al Sadr Movement declared its consolidation as well with Christian families displaced from Mosul and called to take urgent measures to end displacements.
Moreover, the Secretary General of Islamic Conference Organization Ikmal Din Uglu condemned unprecedented violence and displacement against Christians. He called on Iraqi authorities to stop violence and end sufferings of Christians as well as protect them and ensure their security thus protecting their rights and preserving their dignity.
