The fossils of a feathered creature from before the era of birds has been discovered in China.
It is being called Epidexipteryx. It has several structural features in common with birds. Most intriguing are the four ribbon like feathers which seem to have little utility beyond display.
The creature is the size of a pigeon but there is no evidence that it was capable of flight.
The discovery has been made by palaeontologists affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in a famous fossil site in Laioning Province. They are hoping to better understand better the process of evolution of birds and why ornamental features may have preceded ones that facilitated flight.
