No one will ever forget that the year 2008 brought with it many historic events, including not only the first black president this country has ever seen, but also the first female 4-star general to be promoted in the U.S. Armed Services.
Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, who has served in the U.S. Army for 33 years, was officially promoted today in an historic ceremony. Dunwoody will command Army Materiel Command which is responsible for equipping, arming and outfitting soldiers.
Dunwoody, in a quote to a CNN reporter, stated, "There is no one more surprised than I," referring to her recent promotion. Dunwoody had originally planned a physical education teaching career before enlisting in the Army for two years.
Dunwoody has stated that she is now willing to help those she leads with their career development as others have done for her career over the years.
Such an amazing development couldn't have come at a better time. Not only can we consider 2008 the year of the minority candidate, but now, truly all women can claim 2008 as the year of the woman as well.
