Sri Lankan Government troops took control of an eight-km-stretch in Muhalamai,
north of the tiger's stronghold of Kilinochchi after six days of bitter fighting.
Sri Lankan troops on Thursday overran a strategic defence line of the Tamil tigers
in Muhalamai in the Jaffna peninsula killing scores of rebel fighters and also laid
siege to other nearby areas.
The Lankan troops have been piling on pressure on Muhalamai, after the capture
of the Pooneryn town and with this the 53rd and 55th divisions of the army have
opened a new front to confront the tigers.
Overcoming a stiff resistance, the army captured an eight km stretch of defences,
mostly comprising bunkers between Muhalamai and Kilaly.
