"Obama Effect" on Middle East elections

People are talking about the so-called "Obama effect." They are saying that Saad Hariri's Future Movement did better than expected in the Lebanese elections because Barack Obama reached out to the people of the Middle East. So the success of the pro-American March 14 alliance may be an indication that the people of the Middle East are reaching back to Obama, according to some observers. I'm kind of surprised as well. Maybe "surprised" is not the right word. But I'm definitely disappointed. I have nothing personal against Saad Hariri. I just think that Lebanon would be better served by a government that is pro-Lebanon rather than pro-Saudi or pro-US. Maybe Joe Biden's veiled threat about aid being dependent on the outcome of the election also had something to do with it.

Now people are saying that the most important upcoming election is the one that will happen in Iran. If the Iranian people elect a reformist President who will normalize relations with the United States, then this will be a sign that the "Obama effect" is real. I think it is unlikely that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will get re-elected. His economic policies have not worked. And there is a lot of discontent in Iran over the fact that his confrontational foreign policy has left Iran more isolated. But Iran has a stronger sense of nationalism than Lebanon. And so even if the Iranian people elect a President who will be friendlier to the Americans, he is still likely to be pro-Iran rather than pro-US and pro-Saudi like Saad Hariri.

Don't you think that it is high time that we should give Americans another chance? Bushy-effect is done and dusted with. Now Obama maybe Bushy-devil in disguise; wearing an attractive skin but let's give the poor guy one chance ... yez?

Well, Obama has to reciprocate. Although he has banned torture, he still has not ended the practice of extraordinary rendition, i.e. sending detainees to friendly countries like Egypt and Jordan to be tortured.

My brother worked with Saad Hariri for a time and described him as one of the most humble and likable people. His father was also a very popular politician in Lebanon. Lebanon is even smaller than Pakistan (if you know what I mean) and people tend to hear about these things. I don't think there is a single Lebanese politician who would put any interests before Lebanon and I definitely don't think so of Hariri. Hizballah won seats in previous Lebanese elections based on two things 1) the willingness of the Shia Majority to come out and vote and 2) regional tensions. Given the decline in both it is natural they would see a decline in votes. Again, while I am not a fan of either party, the one that advocates less violence is usually the better option and the Hariri family and it's allies have governing experience. A 72 to 51 balance in the parliament should also ensure some cabinet positions for Hizballah and therefore a voice for the majority Shia and also an opportunity to learn about governing a country. All these organisations need to change if they are to survive; rhetoric etc. only gets anyone so far.
