Pakistan, China reaffirm resolve ties

BEIJING: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Wednesday held detailed talks with Chinese State Councillor and Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu and CPC Politburo Standing Committee member Zhaou Yongkong here at the Great Hall of the People.

Rehman Malik, who is on the visit to China from June 9 to June 12 as part of high-level regular consultations between Pakistan and China, also met Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei, said a statement.

Both sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and reviewed regional and international issues of common interest, including the security situation in the region.Rehman Malik conveyed greetings of Pakistani leaders to the Chinese leadership as well as a special message from President Asif Ali Zardari to Chinese President Hu Jintao. The Chinese leaders deeply appreciated the strong commitment of President Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani to cement and strengthen existing Pakistan-China relations.

During the talks, both sides emphasised the need to address common threats to the security and stability of Pakistan and China. It was also reaffirmed by both sides to defeat terrorism, extremism and separatism. The Chinese leadership expressed full support for Pakistan’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.

Strong support for Pakistan’s efforts to advance its core national objectives of security and economic development was also underscored by the Chinese side.The Pakistani side expressed deep gratitude of its leadership and people for the generous assistance provided by the government of China for the internally displaced persons of Swat and adjoining areas.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik briefed the Chinese dignitaries on the steps taken by his government for the safety of Chinese nationals in Pakistan.The Chinese leadership conveyed its deep appreciation to the government of Pakistan for its consistent efforts to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in Pakistan.

The Chinese Ministry of Public Security acknowledged with appreciation its cooperation with the Interior Ministry of Pakistan.Both sides agreed to continue the process of close consultations and cooperation on all areas of common interest.
