POSITION & FUNCTION

Maulana Suffi Muhammad is the Amir (head) of the Tanzeem Nifaze Shariati Mohammadi.

BACKGROUND

After the Soviet war in the 1980s, western parts of North West Frontier provincial (N.W.F.P) gradually came under the grip of religions radicalism. People in Malakand and Swat districts, population mainly by the Yousufzai Pashtuns tribes started gathering in public places to burn personal electronics equipments such as television sets, tape recorders, VCRS, Computers, CD players and other musical equipment because they are, again , the significance of this development is that it has motivated by the religions sect.

Sufi Muhammad Tanzeem got momentum in 1994 when they blocked malakand Tunnel and started arm struggle in the Swat district of N.W.F.P There was an exchange of firing also b/w the Tanzeem workers and Security personals. Later an a Cease fire was announced by Sufi Muhammad and Shari regulation (Islamic Law) was implemented by the then govt of PPP in malakand Division. After 9/11 when the U.S and its allied forces attacked Afghanistan, Sufi Muhammad encouraged and organized thousand of people to fight against the western powers invading Afghanistan at the time of the downfall of the Taliban in 2001.

Most of his Mujahideen were killed or arrested by the Northern alliance and only a few were able to return to Pakistan including SUFI MUHAMMAD. The Pakistani govt immediately arrested him and kept him in jail till May, 2008.

Sufi Muhammad lost much of his support. Currently after his released from the jail Sufi Muhammad so far have good terms with the govt. In an interview he said I would continue a peaceful struggle for Islamic Sharia.

POLITICAL DISPOSITION

Maulana Sufi Muhammad, before starting TNSM movement, he belonged to Jamat-i-Islami. So actually he is a JI dissident. He frequently used to go to Afghanistan in the Afghan-Russia war. Maulana Sufi Muhammad has always been critical of western and American role in the region. Therefore after the US invasion in Afghnistan Sufi Muhamamad with has thousands number of colleagues went to Afghanistan to fight jihad.

INCIDENTS

Maulana Sufi Muahammad became a public figure in 1994 when his TNSM movement got momentum, and they blocked Malakand Tunnel and later on the govt implemented Sharia Regulation 1994 in the courts.

In August 1994 there was an exchange of firing between security forces and Sufi Muhammad loyal workers in the different areas of Swat. As a result many security personals and the loyal workers of TNSM were killed. But only after three days ceasefire was announced between the parties.

In his recent interview Maulana Sufi Muhammad Said that we will continue peaceful struggle for Islami Sharia. He also said that we have no contact and relationship with Maulana Fazlullah and his associates.
